Being filled, controlled and empowered by the HOLY SPIRIT is the best thing that could happen to any Christain.

Because the holy spirit is the sustainer of every Christain faith. And it is the right of every believer to be filled with the HOLY SPIRIT.

Jesus disciples though, had been with Him for three years, were not equipped to carry out the Lord’s great commission until they were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, before they were able to witness Christ.

Apostle Peter with his position denied Christ because he lacked the power that the Holy Spirit gives whenever He comes upon a man.

Tragically, many Christians do not know or have this holy spirit in their lives. Some don’t even believe in the person of the Holy Spirit.

At receiving the HOLY SPIRIT Apostle Peter became an outstanding preacher. The strength of his word was so great that he turned three thousand people to Christ.

The dead returned to life (Acts 9:40), the sick were healed even just by touching his shadow as it passed by (Acts 5:15).

FIRST, WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

In Scripture, we learned that the Holy Spirit is God. There is only one God but working in three diverse ways and He the HOLY SPIRIT is the third supreme person of the Trinity.

  • The Holy Spirit is God 1 Corinthians 2:10-11, 1 Thessalonians 1:5, Luke 1:35.
  • He is the third person of the Trinity, coequal with God the Father and God the Son. What the father is, is what the son is and is what the holy spirit is. Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 13:14.
  • They are one God working in three dimensions to archive one particular goal John 1:1-2.

His purpose of coming:

  • The Holy Spirit came to give us the power to witness for Christ Acts 1:8.
  • He came to glorify Christ and lead us into the truth of God’s word John 16:13-14.
  • He came that he might guide and direct us in our prayer life. Romans 8:26-27
  • The Holy Spirit operates in our lives to fit us into God’s Sonship. Romans 8:14
  • He came to help us know more of God, for it is impossible to know or serve God without the person of the Holy Spirit in our lives. John 3:5-6
  • The Holy Spirit came to convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. John 16:7-11

The HOLY SPIRIT is eternal, He encourages, He gives understanding, He gives peace, He comforts, He directs, and He can be prayed to.

He is God residing inside believers who have accepted Christ as their Savior.

To be filled with the Holy Spirit is to be filled with Christ, His commandments and principles, to abide in Him in all circumstances.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…

The word of God becomes clearer, understandable and more meaningful to us when we have the person of the holy spirit in our lives.

The reason some Christians are not filled with the holy spirit is as a result of unbelief and lack of the knowledge of God.

Jesus promised us in John 14:12, that if we believe in Him, that we would do greater works than he did. It is only what you want and believes in that you look for and desire to have.

HOW TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT:

The filling of the Holy Spirit doesn’t happen by magic, and it is never a one time experience but it continues.

It is also important to recognize that there are several factors that can contribute to preparing your heart for the filling of the Spirit.

1. You must desire for the filling of the Holy Spirit:

Psalm 42:1-2 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God. My soul yearning for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?

You have the promise of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. According to the book of Matthew 5:6 and it says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

2. You must confess and forsake any sin in you:

1 John 1:9 But if we confess our sins to God, he will keep his promise and do what is right: he will forgive us our sins and wash us from all unrighteousness.

Jesus promised, “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.

Proverbs 28:13 He who covers his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.

3. You must believe and have faith in the person of the Holy Spirit:

Matthew 21:22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith. You receive Christ by faith, and equally, live by faith.

It is by grace you have been saved, through faith. It is also by faith that you will be filled with the Holy Spirit.

And this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.

Everything you receive from God, from the moment you become born again until now, is by faith. Therefore, If you really want to be filled with the Holy Spirit? You can be filled right now, by faith.

There are two important words you must not forget while claiming the filling of God’s spirit by faith. They are His command and promise, His command is that we are filled with the spirit.

Ephesians 5:18. Do not get drunk with wine, which will only ruin you; instead, be filled with the Spirit. His promise is that whenever we call on Him according to his will, He hears and answers us.

1 John 5:14-15 This is the confidence we have in God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that whatever we ask of him he hears, then why should we be in doubt of Him.

To be filled with the Holy Spirit is never a one time experience. We should be constantly filled with the holy spirit as a way of life. It is not simply by prayer only that we are filled but also by faith.

4. You must be willing and ready to surrender your entire life to Christ:

Romans 12:1-2 says, Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy. To present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. For this is your true and fitting worship.

Don’t imitate the habits and attitudes of this world. But allow God to transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.

Then you will be able to examine and appreciate what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Isaiah 40:31 But those who trust in the LORD will revive their strength. They will fly on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow tired, they will walk and not be weak.
