Prayer is a privilege given to every child of God to exercise on their daily living. Against the arrows of the wicked one. But there are some little forces that are hindrances to healthy prayer life.
Often we are disturbed whenever God does not answer our prayers when we needed Him to. Most times we feel disappointed and frustrated. Wanting to give up hope as a result of the delay in our expectations.
But in the midst of all these thoughts, questions and imaginations. Have you ever managed to examine yourself to know the reasons why your prayers are not answered?
Is it your fault or that God purposely refused to answer your prayers, Or does it mean that He doesn’t love you? Of course, God listens to us, God loves us. God in His supremacy answers our prayers too.
Though sometimes He may decide to keep quiet not because he didn’t want to, but because he wanted to give you the best and at the right time.
God answers prayer in three ways:
- Sometimes God tells us to wait for His own right time because He has his timing.
- Sometimes God says yes because He wants you to have it at that particular time.
- While sometimes God says no you don’t deserve what you asked for.
But we must be in the know, however, that apart from God asking us to wait for the right time for our prayers to be answered.
There are few other things that stop and hinders our prayers from being answered, and it’s our responsibility to take care of it all.
Most times the answer to our prayers are being hindered by our sinful acts. There are many sins that man commits against God and mankind.
Which are capable of blocking the channel through which we communicate God. Isaiah 59:1-3. Says that the arm of the Lord is not too short to save.
Nor his ear too dull to hear our cry. But our iniquities have separated us from the Lord our maker; our sins have hidden his face from us that he will not hear.
Because your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. your lips have spoken falsely, and your tongue whispers wicked things.
Sin is like a worm that eats up the good of anything it comes against. It is a virus and should be dealt with. 1John 3:4 defined sin as a transgression of the law.
Everyone who sins breaks the law, making sin itself lawlessness. Ezekiel 18:20, described Sin as the child of uncontrolled desire in a man.
It says that anyone who commits sin is the one who will die. That the children will not share or partake in the sin of the parent, not even the parent will share from the guilt of the child.
But those that live righteously it will be credited to them, while wickedness will also be used against the wicked.
That is why man is never at peace within himself whenever he commits sin. Because the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest.
Whose waves cast up mire and mud. And they are separated from the presence of God. Sin is a curse upon all mankind for when a man goes beyond the will of God.
Jeremiah 5:25 Declared that our wrongdoings deprived us good things that come from God. Prayer is an important constituent of every Christian life.
And we should do everything possible within our reach to keep it alive and never be hindered. If you really don’t want your prayers hindered, then stop doing these 7 things.
7 Things that hinder the answer of our prayers:
1. Unforgiven and none reconciliation spirit.
In Matthew 5:23-24 Jesus was telling the disciples the importance of forgiveness. “Therefore, if you are offering a gift to God, there at the altar you remember that your brother has something against you.
That you should leave your gift there, go and reconcile with your brother and then come back and offer your gift.
Mark 11:25-26. Also confirm that, by asking us to forgive whenever we stand praying if we have anything against any:
So that our Father who is in heaven may also forgive us our trespasses. But if we refuse to forgive, even our Father who is in heaven will not forgive our trespasses.
Our prayers, gift, money, etc are an abomination to God when we pray with the unreconciled and unforgiven mind.
When we fail to make peace with our neighbors, friends or families and still come to God. God does not hear us, neither will he answer.
Consider these verses:
- If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. Psalm 66:18.
- The Lord will not hear me if I regard iniquity in my heart. Psalm 66:18.
- If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; Psalm 66:18.
2. Wrong relationship in the family
1 Peter 3:7 Apostle Peter started by advising families, to the Husbands the head of the family, to be considerate as you live with your wives.
And treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life so that nothing will hinder your prayer.
The marriage institution was ordained by God. After creating man, he looked at him and said, “it is not good that man should remain alone”.
So He made a helper fit for him. They were created in a special way by God to complement and perfect each other.
But if this union is allowed to be filled with ungodly disharmony, dispute, and conflict, everything suffers.
Therefore, in other to have a Godly and honored family, everybody must play his or her role well because each of us has a role to play and respect to give to each other.
If such respect is accorded accordingly, we will discover that there will be peace and joy in our families and each time we pray, our prayers will ascend to heaven and it will not be hindered.
3. Covetousness and envy
Covetousness simply means being unnecessarily eager or interested to acquire or to get something, by all means especially someone’s property or possession.
Being envious about somebody’s things, position or success. This is sin before the Lord, today many Christians have set their minds on material possessions.
Such as money, position, cloth, boyfriend and girlfriend that normally leads to fornication and infidelity, etc.
When you forsake sin and take side against it with repentant heart, you have created a good relationship with God and God will in return listen to your prayers and also bring an answer to them.
4. Unconfessed Sin
The Bible made it clear in the book of 2 Chronicles 7:14, “Which says that If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves.
And pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Because we are born of God, and the seed of God has been deposited in us, we are not supposed to continue sinning.
1 John 3:8–9 No one who is born of God commits sin. Because they are born of God, and the seed of God has been deposited in them.
Meaning that anyone who lives in sin, and has taken it as a habit without any sign of repentance or confession, is of the devil because the devil has been sinning from the beginning.
Therefore if anyone fails to confess his or her sin, it will always be there as a stumbling block to his or her prayers.
Any person who is possessed with this spirit of unbelief and doubt. Is like a wave that is blown by the wind and tossed by the sea. He shouldn’t expect to receive anything from the Lord, because of double-mindedness.
Jesus told us to ask anything in His name and believe that we will receive it, then we will receive. Our unbelief stops the answers to our prayers.
Hebrews 11:6. Says that anyone who wishes to come to God must, first of all, believe that God exists and that he is a rewarder of those who earnestly seek him.
Assuredly, Jesus answered and said to them. ” I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree but also if you say to this mountain.
”Be removed and be cast into the sea,” it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” Matthew 21:21-22.
6. Wrong Motive
If we ask for anything and believe in our heart that we will receive it, and still, we won’t be able to receive it. Why? Because we ask with the wrong motives!
James 4:3 made it clear that when you pray for things you don’t get them. It is because you want them for the wrong motives, for your own pleasure alone.
You don’t ask according to God’s will. If we really want our prayers answered, we must learn to ask according to God’s will.
1 John 5:14-15. Says that the confidence that we have in Him is that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. In as much as we, His own people know that He hears us whenever we call on him.
We should not allow the devil to gain upper hand over us with the spirit of self. Without minding what others are passing through.
7. Pride and selfishness
Pride and selfishness are the opposite of Christian love. Whoever it controls it takes over the position of God in his or her life.
God’s demand is that we put Him first in all we do in life according to Exodus 20:3. That says we should have no other gods before me
And those gods include pride and selfishness. Because where ever your heart is, that is where your riches or things you cherish are.
If you cherish pride it automatically becomes your god. We must not allow anything to take pre-eminence in our lives above God.
If you do it is idolatry. And it is capable of making your prayers infective. Proverbs 10:24 says that What the wicked fears will come upon them.
But the desire of the righteous will be granted James 4:10. Also advised us to humble ourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Prayer is more than just asking and receiving, it is a spiritual battle. We engage in spiritual warfare every minute of the day.
Therefore, run away from anything that can make your prayers to be infective or not to be answered. And never you allow the enemies attack on you come to pass.
But aggressively fight them in prayer until you are triumphant over every adversary. Because from the time John preached his message until this very day.
The Kingdom of heaven has suffered violent attacks, and only violent men can take it by force. Matthew 11:12.
