The Importance And Benefits Of Being Honest

The Importance And Benefits Of Being Honest

There lived a king in the Eastern part of Nigeria known as Igwe Oforbuike Ogbuefi who the people of the kingdom were pleased with his method of leadership.

A time came when he became of age and needed to choose a successor. Instead of him choosing one of his assistants or his children, he decided something different.

One day he summoned all the young people in the kingdom, and said, my beloved children as you all know.

It is time for me to step down and select the next king and I have decided to choose one of you.

They were shocked by the king’s decision! I am going to give each one of you a very special seed today says the king.

I want you to go home and plant the seed, water it and come back here after one year from today with what you have grown from this one seed.

Then I will judge and choose the next king according to the plants that you bring. A boy named Echidime “meaning no one knows tomorrow.

Was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. Echidime went home and excitedly told his mother of the developing story.

His mother helped him in getting a pot and planting soil, and he planted the seed and watered it carefully.

From day to day he would water it and watch to see if it had grown.

After three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Little Echidime kept checking on his seed, 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks went by, still, nothing happened to his seed.

By now, others were talking about how good and beautiful their plants have become. But Echidime didn’t have a plant, and he felt like a failure.

After six months, still nothing in his pot. Every other youth had trees and tall plants and he had nothing. Within him, he presumed that he had killed his seed.

But decided never to tell any of his friends but kept waiting for his seed to grow.

Finally, the long-awaited year went by. And all the youths of the kingdom brought their plants to the king for inspection.

Echidime told his mother that he wasn’t going to take an empty pot to the king. The mother encouraged him to go.

But to be honest about what really happened if asked by the king. Echidime managed and took his empty pot to the palace.

He was ashamed of himself seeing all the variety of plants grown by the other youths, they were beautiful in all shapes and sizes.

Many of the other youths laughed and made a mockery of Echidime when he put his empty pot on the floor.

Not long the king arrived, He greeted the young people and surveyed the room. Echidime knowing fully well he did not grow any tree, just tried to hide in the back.

Wow, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown, the king said. I am delighted that today, one of you will be appointed the next king of our great kingdom!

Suddenly, the king spotted Echidime at the back of the room with his empty pot. And he ordered his guards to bring him to the front which they did.

Echidime was terrified, and said to himself, the king knows I have failed to grow my own seed! Maybe he will have me killed!

When he got to the front of the king, the king asked him his name. My name is Echidime, he replied with his hands and legs shaking.

Other youths were laughing and making fun of him. But the king asked everyone to keep calm, he looked at Echidime and announced to the crowd.

Behold your new king! His name is Echidime.

Echidime couldn’t believe it. Echidime couldn’t even grow his seed. All the youth were amazed at the king’s announcement and echoed how could he be the new king?

The king replies to the youth and said, one year ago, I gave every one of you a seed. I also instructed you to take the seed home, plant it, water it.

And bring it back to me today. The truth about it is that I gave you all boiled seeds. Which would never germinate talk more of growing.

But all of you, except Echidime, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. Which means, you all substituted the one I gave you for another seed.

When you found out that the seed would not grow. As you can see, Echidime was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it.

For this reason, he will be crown the new king of this our great kingdom.
